The last two semi-finals spots are at stake Friday at the Rolex Shanghai Masters as the highest seed in the top half of the draw, No. 7 Alex de Minaur takes on No. 16 seed Daniil Medvedev for the 12th time in the evening session. Medvedev, who is the 2019 champion, leads the head-to-head 7-4, including 7-2 on hard courts. In the day session, Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech looks for his first win (0-2) against No. 12 seed Felix Auger-Aliassime. Rinderknech is trying to join his cousin Valentin Vacherot in the semi-finals. Here are Friday's match-ups in order of play on Stadium Court:

Rinderknech is appearing in his first ATP Masters 1000 quarter-final and he's looking to join his cousin [Q] Valentin Vacherot in the semi-finals. Has a 5-2 record in Shanghai after wins over Hamad Medjedovic 6-7(3) 1-0 Ret., No. 28 seed Alex Michelsen 6-3 6-4, No. 3 Alexander Zverev 4-6 6-3 6-2 and No. 15 Jiri Lehecka 6-3 7-6(5). Has only been broken three times, holding 38 of 41 service games (93%), saving 16 of 19 break pts. (84%). The 30-year-old Frenchman is 24-25 on the season (12-14 on hard, 6-7 on clay, 6-4 on grass) with his best results the semi-finals in Kitzbuhel (l. to Cazaux) and also the quarter-finals at London/Queen's Club (as a qualifier) where he defeated Opelka and Shelton before losing to eventual champion Alcaraz. Also lost to Alcaraz in 4R at US Open, his best career Grand Slam result. Came in ranked No. 54 and will return to the Top 50 next Monday at No. 43 for the first time since January 2023. If he wins, will move to No. 37. Came into this season 0-12 vs. Top 10 opponents but has a 4-6 record with two wins over Zverev (here and Wimbledon), No. 10 Shelton in 1R at London/Queen's Club and No. 15 Lehecka in the fourth round.
Auger-Aliassime is one of two players (de Minaur) yet to lose a set and he's playing his first tournament as a newlywed after getting married on Sept. 21 to Nina Ghaibi in Marrakech, Morocco. He has posted wins over [Q] Alejandro Tabilo 6-3 6-3, Jesper de Jong 6-4 7-5 and No. 8 seed Lorenzo Musetti 6-4 6-2 to reach his first quarter-final in Shanghai. Leads the tournament in service games won (28 of 29, 97%) and break points saved (13 of 14, 93%). His win over Tabilo was the 250th tour-level win of his career (now 251-166), becoming second Canadian man to reach that milestone along with Milos Raonic (383). The Canadian No. 1 is on an 11-2 run since start of August with both losses to No. 1 Sinner at ATP Masters 1000 Cincinnati QF and US Open SF, which was his second career Grand Slam SF (2021 US Open). He comes in with a 37-19 match record on the season (28-10 on hard, 6-4 on grass, 3-5 on clay) with two titles: Adelaide (d. Korda) and Montpellier (d. Kovacevic) and also a runner-up in Dubai (l. to Tsitsipas). Also trying to qualify for his second Nitto ATP Finals in Turin after his 2022 debut (went 1-2).

Medvedev improved to 13-4 in Shanghai with a 7-6(6) 6-7(1) 6-4 win over Learner Tien in the fourth round. He also beat No. 18 seed Alejandro Davidovich Fokina 6-3 7-6(5) and opened with a 6-1 6-1 win over qualifier Dalibor Srvcina on Saturday. The 2019 champion was one of three former winners in the draw (also Djokovic, Sinner) and leads the ATP Tour in hard-court wins since 2018 (297). He is 33-20 overall this season, including 22-13 on hard courts (6-4 on clay, 5-3 on grass), the eighth straight year he's won 20+ matches on hard courts. He is 7-2 on the China swing after advancing to Hangzhou QF and Beijing SF in last two tournaments. Has played in 50 tournaments since winning his last title in 2023 ATP Masters 1000 Rome (d. Rune). His best result this season is a runner-up in Halle (l. to Bublik). Also semi-finalist in Marseille (l. to Medjedovic), ATP Masters 1000 Indian Wells (l. to Rune) and last week in Beijing (ret. vs Tien).
De Minaur is appearing in the Shanghai quarter-final for the first time in four appearances after wins over Camilo Ugo Carabelli 6-4 6-2, Kamil Majchrzak 6-1 7-5 and Nuno Borges 7-5 6-2. He leads the tournament in second serve points won (76%) and is No. 2 in service games won (27 of 28, 96%). The No. 1 Aussie enters with a 50-18 match record on the season (37-11 on hard, 10-5 on clay, 3-2 on grass) and he's closing in on 300 career tour-level wins (299-173). His 50 wins are a personal-best and the most by an Aussie man since Lleyton Hewitt won 68 in 2004. His best result was winning his 10th career ATP Tour title in Washington (d. Davidovich Fokina) in July. Also runner-up in Rotterdam in February (l. to No. 3 Alcaraz) and best Grand Slam results were quarter-finals at Australian Open (l. to No. 1 Sinner) and US Open (l. to Auguer-Aliassime). Looking to finish in Top 10 for second straight year after No. 9 last season.
