No. 16 seed Daniil Medvedev, the 2019 champion is also on the schedule. In addition, the two youngest players remaining are American Learner Tien (19) and local wild card Shang Juncheng (20), both talented left-handers looking to reach the fourth round here for the first time. Kamil Majchrzak (POL) vs [7] Alex de Minaur (AUS) -- De Minaur leads 1-0 (2022 Aust. Open 2R, de Minaur 6-4 6-4 6-2)
Majchrzak is making his main draw debut in Shanghai and he has yet to drop a set in wins over Ethan Quinn 6-3 6-4 in the first round and No. 29 seed Brandon Nakashima 6-4 6-0 in the second round. The 29-year-old Pole is the No. 1 player from his country ranked No. 66. He is appearing in the third round of an ATP Masters 1000 tournament for first time in his career. He came into Shanghai with a 2-4 record in Masters 1000 events and his only wins came in 2022 in Indian Wells and Miami. Has a 14-9 record on the season (7-3 on hard, 4-5 on clay, 3-1 on grass) with his best tour-level result the semi-finals in Marrakech in April as a qualifier (l. to Griekspoor). Only facing his third Top 10 opponent in his career (1-1) and beat No. 9 Khachanov in fifth set tie-break in second round of US Open this year.
De Minaur is appearing in the Shanghai third round for the second time in four appearances after opening with a 6-4 6-2 win over Camilo Ugo Carabelli on Saturday. Also reached third round in his 2018 debut (l. to No. 5 Zverev). The No. 1 Aussie enters with a 48-18 match record on the season (35-11 on hard, 10-5 on clay, 3-2 on grass) and he's closing in on 300 career tour-level wins (297-173). His 48 wins are a personal-best and the most by an Aussie man since Lleyton Hewitt won 68 in 2004.
His best result was winning his sixth career ATP Tour title in Washington (d. Davidovich Fokina) in July. Also runner-up in Rotterdam in February (l. to No. 3 Alcaraz) and best Grand Slam results were quarter-finals at Australian Open (l. to No. 1 Sinner) and US Open (l. to Auguer-Aliassime).
[WC] Juncheng Shang (CHN) vs Nuno Borges (POR) -- First Meeting
Borges is appearing in the Shanghai third round for the first time after wins over Botic van de Zandschulp 7-6(5) 7-6(5) and [LL] Aleksandar Vukic 7-6(7) 6-4. The 28-year-old Portuguese No. 1 has won a personal-best 27 matches this season (27-27) with records of 15-13 on hard, 8-10 on clay and 4-4 on grass. His best ATP Tour result is the semi-finals in Auckland (l. to Bergs) and three quarter-finals: on clay in Marrakech and on home soil in Estoril, and on grass in 's-Hertogenbosch.Had a 7-4 record in Grand Slam play with 3R at Australian Open, Roland Garros, Wimbledon and 2R at US Open. He comes in ranked No. 51 and trying to finish in Top 50 the second straight season after a year-end best No. 36 last year when he captured his first ATP Tour title in Bastad (d. Nadal).
Shang is the second-youngest (20) player remaining behind American Learner Tien (19). The left-hander opened with a 6-4 3-6 6-3 win over American Aleksandar Kovacevic in the first round and followed with his first career Top 10 win (1-6) over No. 10 Karen Khachanov 7-6(3) 6-3 in the second round. This is the third straight year at least one Chinese player has reached the third round here and Zhang Zhizhen advanced to fourth round two years ago. He was sidelined from January until August with a foot injury but returned to ATP Tour in Toronto in July. His PIF ATP Ranking has dropped to No. 237 and just over a year ago he reached a career-high No. 47 on Oct. 21, 2024. Began season with a semi-final in Hong Kong (ret. vs. Nishikori) and retired in first round at Australian Open (vs. Davidovich Fokina). Did not return until Toronto in July. Has a 3-5 record since returning to action (6-7 overall). Last year became first Chinese player to win an ATP Tour title on home soil in Chengdu (d. No. 19 Musetti).

Zverev opened on Saturday with a 6-4 6-4 win over French qualifier Valentin Royer to improved to 13-6 lifetime in Shanghai. The 28-year-old German's best results are a final in 2019 (l. to No. 4 Medvedev) and semi-final in 2018 (l. to No. 3 Djokovic). He has a 47-20 record on the season (24-10 on hard, 18-7 on clay, 6-3 on grass) with his best result coming on home soil in Munich where he won his 24th career title in Munich (d. Shelton). Began season by reaching his third Grand Slam final at Australian Open (l. to No. 1 Sinner). He is looking to qualify for the season-ending Nitto ATP Finals in Turin for the eighth time in nine years (except 2022). He comes in ranked No. 3 and will finish in Top 10 for the eighth time in nine years (No. 12 in 2022). Has finished in Top 3 twice -- No. 3 in 2021 and No. 2 last year.
Rinderknech is appearing in the Shanghai third round for the first time (3-2) after wins over Hamad Medjedovic 6-7(3) 1-0 Ret. and No. 28 seed Alex Michelsen 6-3 6-4. The 30-year-old Frenchman is 22-25 on the season (10-14 on hard, 6-7 on clay, 6-4 on grass) with his best results the semi-finals in Kitzbuhel (l. to Cazaux) and also the quarter-finals at London/Queen's Club (as a qualifier) where he defeated Opelka and Shelton before losing to eventual champion Alcaraz. Also lost to Alcaraz in 4R at US Open, his best career Grand Slam result. Has a 2-18 career record (2-6 this season) vs. Top 10 opponents with both wins coming on grass this summer over No. 3 Zverev in 1R at Wimbledon and No. 10 Shelton in 1R at London/Queen's Club.

Davidovich Fokina is appearing in the third round here for the first time in three visits after opening with a 6-4 6-4 win over Matteo Arnaldi on Saturday. The 26-year-old Spaniard is putting together his best season despit not winning an ATP Tour title. Broke into the Top 20 for the first time reaching a personal-best No. 18 in August after his runner-up effort in Washington (d. No. 4 Fritz in QF, d. No. 8 Shelton in SF, l. to de Minaur after holding two MPs). Also runner-up in Acapulco (l. to Machac) and Delray Beach (l. to Kecmanovic after holding two MPs) in back-to-back weeks. Has won a career-best 37 matches (37-22) and has records of 23-14 on hard,9-6 on clay and 5-2 on grass. Looking to finish in Top 20 for first time in his career (previous year-end best No. 26 in 2023).
Medvedev improved to 11-4 in Shanghai with a 6-1 6-1 win over qualifier Dalibor Srvcina on Saturday. The 2019 champion is one of three former winners in the draw (also Djokovic, Sinner) and leads the ATP Tour in hard-court wins since 2018 (295). He is 31-20 overall this season, including 20-13 on hard courts (6-4 on clay, 5-3 on grass), the eighth straight year he's won 20+ matches on hard courts. He is 5-2 on the China swing after advancing to Hangzhou QF and Beijing SF in last two tournaments. Has played in 50 tournaments since winning his last title in 2023 ATP Masters 1000 Rome (d. Rune). His best result this season is a runner-up in Halle (l. to Bublik). Also semi-finalist in Marseille (l. to Medjedovic), ATP Masters 1000 Indian Wells (l. to Rune) and last week in Beijing (ret. vs Tien).
