Alexander Zverev is on the cusp of adding another milestone to his standout 2026 season at the Rolex Shanghai Masters.

The 29-year-old is the top seed at the penultimate ATP Masters 1000 event of the season and, in either of two scenarios, could clinch ATP Year-End No. 1 presented by PIF honours for the first time.

Zverev controls his own destiny: If the two-time Nitto ATP Finals champion reached the semi-finals, he will clinch year-end No. 1 honours. But in another scenario, if Carlos Alcaraz and Ben Shelton lose at any point of the tournament, Zverev would also clinch year-end No. 1. Regardless of what happens in Shanghai, Zverev will not rise above Jannik Sinner to No. 1 when the rankings re-run on the Monday following the event.

Zverev owns an ATP Tour-leading 58 wins in 2026 heading into Shanghai, according to the Infosys ATP Win/Loss Index, highlighted by his first two Grand Slam titles at Roland Garros and the US Open.

The German is in first place in the PIF ATP Live Race To Turin, which serves as the barometer for the year-end No. 1 battle.

Zverev leads second-placed Jannik Sinner by 810 points, with the Italian ending his season on Tuesday due to injury. Zverev is 4,200 points clear of third-placed Alcaraz and 4,320 points ahead of fourth-placed Shelton.

Zverev begins his event at the Masters 1000 event against home wild card Wu Yibing, while Alcaraz faces Juan Manuel Cerundolo and Shelton takes on Daniel Altmaier.
