Chinese 21-year-old Zhou Yi stunned former World No. 5 Lorenzo Musetti Friday night to reach the third round of the Rolex Shanghai Masters.
World No. 277 Zhou saved three set points in the first-set tie-break and produced some of his best tennis in a spectacular deciding-set tie-break to claim a 7-6(7), 3-6, 7-6(1) victory.
The Beijing native, who fired 14 aces, becomes the third-lowest-ranked player to reach the Shanghai third round in event history after No. 560 Wu Yibing and No. 336 Yosuke Watanuki, both in 2024.
“I don’t believe it and I do believe it,” an elated Zhou said. “I showed myself that what I’m doing is correct. I want to enjoy the happiness in myself right now and then I’ll come back tomorrow, do my routines and training and prepare for my next match.”
“I was watching Khachanov [who defeated Arthur Fery] play three tie-breaks before my match and that put me in the mindset that everyone has a chance to win two tie-breaks, so why not me?”
Zhou laid the foundation for his victory in the first-set tie-break. After saving three set points from 3/6, Zhou fearlessly attacked the net behind his second serve to confidently close out the set.
He put his finger to his ear and then raised his arms, urging the Chinese fans to make even more noise.
He played confident, aggressive tennis in the third-set tie-break, racing to a 5/0 lead before closing out the match shortly thereafter.
Zhou will next play 2023 champion Hubert Hurkacz, who upset four-time champion Novak Djokovic in the first match of the night session.
