Hong Kong’s Coleman Wong is one win away from making his main draw debut at the Rolex Shanghai Masters after a strong 6-4, 6-1 win over Australian Cruz Hewitt in the first round of qualifying Monday night.

Wong, who at No. 101 is approaching his career-high PIF ATP Ranking of 92, will on Tuesday play South African Lloyd Harris, who defeated Australian Alex Bolt 7-5, 6-4.

China’s Rigele Te rallied from a set down to defeat Australian Adam Walton 5-7, 6-3, 6-4. Ranked just 849, 28-year-old Te recently lost first-round qualifying matches in Hangzhou and Beijing, but now finds himself in contention to reach his first ATP Masters 1000 main draw.

On Tuesday Te will play 22-year-old World No. 154 Ilia Simakin.

Kyrian Jacquet won his qualifying opener in straight sets.

In-form Frenchman Kyrian Jacquet continued his impressive Asian swing with a 6-2, 7-6(1) first-round qualifying win over China’s Tianhui Zhang.

The 25-year-old World No. 74 had not won a tour-level match since July before he arrived in China to play in Hangzhou. But he reached the semi-finals at the ATP 250 and last week beat former World No. 4 Holger Rune en route to the quarter-finals at the ATP 500 in Tokyo.

On Tuesday Jacquet faces Japan’s Rei Sakamoto in his quest to qualify for the main draw for the first time.

Sakamoto, 20, defeated South Korea’s Seongchan Hong 6-3, 7-5 and is now within one victory of qualifying for the second consecutive year. Countryman Yoshihito Nishioka, who also came through qualifying last year, defeated Aleksandr Shevchenko 6-2, 6-4.

Shintaro Mochizuki defeated countryman Taro Daniel to give Japan three players in the final round of qualifying.

Tunisia’s Aziz Dougaz upset qualifying top seed Lorenzo Sonego of Italy 7-6(5), 5-7, 6-4.
