Ben Shelton praised Arthur Gea after the World No. 4 fell to the Frenchman in the third round of the Rolex Shanghai Masters on Sunday.

Shelton arrived at the Chinese ATP Masters 1000 event following a landmark run to his first Grand Slam final at the US Open. However, he subsequently lost both of his singles matches in Davis Cup action before withdrawing from the ATP 500 event in Tokyo due to injury, leaving him with limited time to prepare for the Asian swing.

“I got outplayed today,” Shelton said after Gea's 7-6(5), 7-6(3) victory. “The guy played better than me. A hundred percent, I would have liked to have come over here earlier and be prepared and have already dealt with the jet lag by the time I was playing here in the Shanghai Masters.”

In their first Lexus ATP Head2Head meeting, Gea produced an impressive performance to hold his nerve in two tight tie-breaks and secure his first win over a Top-10 opponent. It continues a breakthrough year for the 21-year-old, who won his first ATP Tour title in Los Cabos before reaching the fourth round at the US Open as a lucky loser.

The Frenchman’s ability to neutralise Shelton’s serve and consistently push him back from the baseline proved decisive, denying the American the short balls he typically uses to dictate rallies and move forward. Shelton won just 63 per cent (40/63) of first-serve points, according to Infosys ATP Stats.

“I thought he handled my serve outstandingly,” Shelton said. “I thought he did a great job on return today [from] start to finish. He put it a lot in play. He was putting them deep to the baseline. It was tough to attack.

“There were hardly any — as the match went on — points where I was getting easy free points or first balls to attack and come to the net on, so a lot of credit to him.”

Shelton may have lost in the third round in Shanghai, but the American can take encouragement from a season in which he has established himself at the top. The 24-year-old has won a career-best four titles in 2026 and climbed to fourth in the PIF ATP Live Race To Turin, putting himself in a strong position to qualify for the Nitto ATP Finals for the second consecutive year.

Shelton is next scheduled to compete at the ATP 500 event in Basel, which begins on 26 October.
